Major win for foster and kinship carers with announcement of paid parental leave for NSW public service workers caring for vulnerable children

Sydney, Australia: National not-for-profit organisation Adopt Change has welcomed the NSW Government decision to extend paid parental leave to all foster, kinship and relative carers employed in the public service, as part of major improvements to arrangements for NSW public sector staff.

The changes mean carers can access leave entitlements that give them a chance to help vulnerable children settle into a new home and family.

Adopt Change operates the My Forever Family NSW program to support and advocate for foster and kinship carers across the state, and CEO Renee Leigh Carter is pleased by the reforms , looking forward to the positive difference this will make for carer families.

“This is excellent news and we are grateful to the NSW Government for taking this important step that will help carers across the state,” Ms Leigh Carter says.

“It gives an opportunity for carers to be able to afford to take some time off work to welcome a child or children into their home and spend quality time with them while they settle in and adapt to their new surroundings.”

Carers will be able to access up to 16 weeks of paid leave that will cover critical aspects of settling into a new home, such as school enrolments and medical appointments.

This leave was previously only provided where certain court orders existed, but is now available for all court orders where a child is placed in the ongoing care of a public sector employee.

“To extend parental leave provisions to now include carers is also a crucial step in providing a suite of wrap-around supports for children who have experienced trauma,” Ms Leigh Carter says.

“Families across the board need to be supported to thrive. By recognising the role carers play in the lives of children and young people, and providing them with the appropriate parental entitlements this entails, enables them to better support the children they care for.”

Ms Leigh Carter is hopeful the new legislation will encourage more people to consider opening their homes to children in need, and urges other jurisdictions and companies to also implement the changes to their parental leave policies.

“What we now want to see is other governments and companies following suit; to support their employees to be able to open their homes and provide a safe and nurturing environment for children and young people to be able to thrive and for carers to receive the recognition and support they deserve.”
