National call for urgent action to help provide homes for children living in crisis accommodation

The national campaign calls for all Australians to help unlock homes for the ~4,800 children and young people in the care system living with shift workers in group housing and motels.

Sydney, Australia – Australia is facing a critical shortage of carer homes, with a rising number of children needing home-based care. With 45,273 children in government care, almost 4,800 are not in a family-based home, instead being housed with shift workers in residential group settings and motels. The children’s ages range from infants to teens.

To tackle this issue, national not-for-profit organisation Adopt Change has launched their 2024 “Help Unlock A Home for Every Child” campaign to call on Australians to help change this situation. By opening their homes or donating to assist, individuals and businesses can help provide children with the security and healing that only a home can offer.

The campaign video is voiced by Adopt Change Founder and global humanitarian Deborra-lee Furness, who stresses the importance of the need for children to be raised in families, a cause she has long championed.Around 4,800 children in the Australian care system don’t live in a family-based home, so children are living with shift workers in group housing and motels. Kids need to grow up in families.”

Adopt Change CEO Renée Leigh Carter highlights the need for urgent action.

“It’s simple. Every child and teen in Australia should be growing up in a family based home, with people who care for them, where they have the opportunity to play, learn and thrive. By opening your home or donating to support our work, you can open more homes and support healing for children who have experienced trauma. We can do better than this Australia – if you are able, now is the time to find out more, to support or to let others know of this hugely important need.”

Community members can support the campaign in two ways:

  1. Open your home: Register your interest in opening your home to a child
  1. Donate to open more homes for children: Donations of $10 or more will also receive a thank-you key to symbolize opening more homes for children and can be used as a Christmas decoration, gift tag or keepsake.

Businesses can join the cause by donating, displaying keys on behalf of Adopt Change and helping raise awareness and much needed funds.

“As spend time with family and friends this festive season, it’s important to remember there are children – including toddlers and teens – who won’t have this opportunity. For as little as $10 you can help find more family-based homes for kids and teens.” adds Ms Leigh Carter.
